was sanding the bottom yesterday. found a large bubble on top of the wing. I ground it out , and it was filled with a brown powder kind of like dirt or rust. Anyone encounter this?

Well it's not rust. The wing keel is lead that is encapsulated with a white colored material.

scary thought, but how is the bulb attached to the keel stub? Could that bubble be the remains of a rusted bolt top?

No, its out near the edge of the wing, unless the wings are bolted onto the center stub and not cast in one piece. it certainly expanded as if it were rust, but yes it is lead, i can see the lead in the bottom of the hole. I'll take a pic this sat. b4 i finish cleaning it out and fill it.

i guess a piece of steel could have been dropped into the cast.

Recommend wearing a particle mask or dust mask whenever working with lead. Lead salts are as poisonous as lead, and lead salt dust can easily be inhaled inadvertently.

I think you're right about some steel object falling into the mold and rolling into the wing area. When the lead was poured in, the steel floated to the top of the wing and was pushed out toward the edge. The gelcoat-like encapsulation covered it, and then nature had her way.
