Trying to determine the year of my C25 based on the sail number. When I bought it I was told it was an 89, but I am thinking it is a 90. The sail number is 6001. I am thinking of selling her is the reason for the question. Thanks Greg
Two ways to do it: 1. If you check your hull ID number scratched into your transom you'll find a code corresponding to month and year. Check HIN details to decode it. 2. Look at the "Boat Search" section to the left of this screen. You or previous owner may have registered it, or you can find adjacent hull numbers in the 5990-6010 range and approximate the build year.
Just checking is this it? #6001 - Lively Lady, 1989 Tall,Wing Keel Greg Phillips, Tennille GA USA
Your Hull Information Number (HIN) is on your registration and insurance policy as well as on the transom below the rub-rail. In that vintage, the last two digits of the HIN are the model year.

Also . . . . the boat mfg. year may not be exactly the same as the calendar year. As I recall the "model" year begins in something like September. Last year I purchased a "new" left over 2014 (or so read all the company's documentation) powerboat with a build date on the transom of 8-13) Ditto my former powerboat purchased new in 1999 was built in 1998. As I purchased my C-25 used I will never know what the alleged "model year" was vs the 1980 transom and registration date. Just a long way of saying you may have a "model year" 1990 that was built in 1989.

8/13 build of a 2014 model should read H314 in the HIN. In any case, as with a car, the model year is the model year. Design changes are supposed to correspond to that, not build year. However, I don't think there were any significant changes between 1989 and 1990--I believe the last changes first appeared on the 1989 model.
One more thing: As far as I know, Catalina uses a model code after CTY (Catalina Yachts) in the HIN for every model, with K being the C-25, followed by a 4-digit hull number for that model.

Thanks for the responses. The back plate on transom is worn smooth. Based on info provided, I am going to list the boat as a 1990. Thanks for the help. Greg
Did you look on the outside of the transom, probably on the starboard side just below the rubrail, for a number that might look like it was carved into the gelcoat with a hot nail? That's where you'll find it on many C-25s, although I don't know about the 1989-91 model years. But looking at our Boat Search and your sail number, you appear to be correct.

In the state of Georgia aren't you required to transfer a title and register your boat along with the boat's HIN? I'd believe it's equivalent to an auto registration with the car's VIN or Vehicle ID Number. Further the boat insurance is probably required if you keep it at a marina or haul it up on the hard for winter.

On my '89 it's just under the rub rail on the upper right side of the transom and does look like it was scratched into the gelcoat.
To pick nits, I suspect the last 4 characters are I990, meaning it was built in September (I) of 1989 (9) as a 1990 (90) model.
