Ok here is my next noob question. My boat has many spider cracks, mostly on the deck but also on the port topsides. My question is do we repair spider cracks for cosmetic reasons or for structural reasons. as in maybe if not repaired it could get worse. And are spider cracks limited to mostly the gell coat or can they go deeper ? Thanks again.
Generally they're due to shrinking of the gelcoat with age. Occasionally they are evidence of flexing, but rarely signs of structural problems (unless you see them around the swing keel trunk).
If they bother you, the easiest fix (on a white deck) is this stuff you can get at WM:
Open the crack a little with a nail (not going too deep), apply a little of this, let it set up, and sand it smooth with fine sandpaper. It probably won't work very well if you don't widen the cracks a little so the patch can get down into it.
