Has anyone fit 2 group 27 or larger batteries in the battery compartment under the starboard settee behind the water tank? I just bought a 77 C25 that came with 2 group 24 car batteries, I figure I need to replace them so I might as well put the largest I can fit in there.

Yes. Two group 27 batteries will fit in my settee. Depending on your cabling it might get tight. Make sure to cover and insulate the positive leads and always add fuses (not thermal or magnetic breakers) to your circuits.

Thanks Voyager. I just rewired with 6AWG cable and 60 amp ANL fuses between the batteries and the 1/2/both switch so I'm good there.

Now what probably won't fit are two G27 battery boxes - the plastic containers that hold your battery in with a strap over the cover. You'd have to get exact measurements for width height and length to estimate that. But you must have a strap for each battery - at least that's CT reg. That keeps the battery in place and not flying around the cabin in case of a capsize, although it would not prevent the acid spilling out of the battery should that occur. During my recent boat safety check the inspector strongly recommended a rubber boot for the positive terminal. My electrical tape just didn't cut it. I went to my local auto store to get it. Cheap insurance!

Its not required to have battery boxes but tie downs yes and a boot over the pos. terminal yes. Two group 27's will fit, Maybe even group 31 since the 31 case is only slightly bigger. Just install them port to starboard. Battery's really don't leak anymore like back in the 50's. Technology has made better caps.

A 27 and 31 will fit in mine, but not 2 31s.

Dave, you think not? this is my group 31 and its in a group 27 box. Looks to me if you just slide my battery to the right some there is plenty of room even with my water pump taking up some room. But like I said you would have to orientate the battery's like mine and maybe ditch the box.

Thanks all. It does look like 2 31's would fit, I don't have the hose going down into the hull, just the one running for and aft and also my base is a lot bigger than what is Islander's picture.

If your base is bigger that's a good thing. The group 31 batteries are only slightly larger than a group 27. I think it was around 1/4" on one dimension. I use them for the added amp/hrs since I only have the single battery. 105A/h VS 90A/H for the group 27. That hose goes to the water tank. There is a 90deg fitting that goes through the bulkhead to the tank. The pump is for my pressure water system.

That's why I said "in mine" Pearl has a real battery compartment not open to the forward compartment under the starboard settee that looks nothing like your space. 27s and 31s can only be oriented fore and aft.

edit: tpothen needs a signature describing his boat: Year, T(all) or S(tandard) rig, Layout (traditional, dinette), hull number to help us help him.

I think you're right about the !/4". I was so close to getting two 31s to fit in mine fore an aft, but the sides taper down and it wouldn't work. And as I said, neither size will fit athwartship in Pearl.
