So the 1984 swing keel version did not come with coaming compartments in the cockpit. Is it practical to build them? Has anyone done this on their boat?
Can't help much, mine had them. In the short run, you could get some of the pouches with suction cups and put them where you need them. Be sure to check in the cabin behind the coamings before you do any cutting to see what clearances you have!

Coaming compartments were an option when ordering a new boat. All the needed parts used to be available. If they still are, I think they would be fairly easy to add. I don't think the parts were specific to Catalina.
