Greetings all
Is there a way to test the operation of the depth gauge while on hard?
I believe the unit to be the original. When I put power to it, the display does show 0. Any way to test the transducer?

Thanks in advance

Jan, Can't answer this without a make/model of the depth gauge. A photo would help if you don't know. Some brands can be run in a test/simulation mode like my Standard Horizon by pushing the buttons in a sequence.

You could probably figure out some way to provide a column of water for the transducer to ping against, maybe something like a 6" PVC pipe a couple of feet long hot melt glued to the hull and well supported. The water column is going to be heavy and it must completely submerge the surface of the transducer (I'm assuming it's a thru-hull version like mine).

However, if you're just looking to see if it works, it should make a clicking sound if you can get an ear against it, or a stethoscope or other type of hose. I know that this works for a Humminbird as I've done it with mine when my OEM transducer quit working (and it made no noises as the service tech I talked to about said it should if it were working properly).

It's a DataMarine - I'm told it was the original. I'll check to see if I can hear or 'feel' anything clicking.

You can also check for current draw if you have an ammeter capable of measuring up to 10A. On the back of the display you'll see two sets of cables:
1. Power - should be positive and negative. Positive should be red or white, negative black or green, but that's only a guess
2. Sensor cable - it should run between the gauge and the "pinger" on the hull.
Turn the power off. Set the ammeter for 10A and disconnect the positive power lead. Put the red ammeter lead on the positive wire and the black lead on the positive terminal on the gauge in series to measure current. Disconnect the pinger from the gauge.
Turn on power and read the current supplying the meter. It might take 1/2 to 1 amp. Now plug in the pinger. The amperage should increase significantly if the pinger works, since it is now creating some strong sonar pulses.
Also, try listening for the clicks corresponding to the pulses.
