This is more of a question then a topic. I own a 1989 C25, wing keel, which has never had bottom paint as its been a trailer sailor all of these years. The hull is light gray. I now wish to keep it in a fresh water lake and apply bottom paint. The question is does it have barrier paint on it? Did Catalina sell these boats with or without a barrier coat? If there is no barrier coat on hull is it wise to apply bottom paint? Thanks, Dave

Nice boat, and a great model year. Probably best to jot down the HIN number and call Catalina Yachts. They should be able to look up the boat and tell you if they applied a barrier coat or not, and maybe which dealer they sold it to. If the dealer is still in business, they might be able to shed more light on the subject.
Just my 2 cents!

Yes, the gray is barrier coat, put VC 17 on it and never look back.

So I have an answer and more from Catalina Yachts technical assistance. My boats hull indeed has a barrier coat. The light gray color of the hull is the main clue that this is the case. The 1989 was given a "glidden blister guard barrier coat" instead of gel coat and at the time was believed to be one of the best solutions to blisters. I was told a through cleaning and perhaps a solvent wash before bottom painting is all that is needed to go. And of course no sanding to the hulls barrier coat. Thanks to both Dave and Frank for your help.
