Hello Forum -

I'm toying with the idea of going electric instead of my 8 HP 4-Stroke. Does anyone know of any success stories? The Tohatsu I have works OK but I always feel that it will fail me at to wrong time. In addition to that, I motor to the bay I sail in because the lake is not the best for sailing there. The noise of the outboard kind of defeats the purpose of having a sailboat in the first place. I figured a bank of 4 batteries and a solar panel to keep it charged would probably work. Please share any info you might have on the subject.

How far timewise is the trip to the bay and back? A 4 battery bank will probably need a very large solar panel to recharge them in a decent amount of time.

Hi Brian,
I bought a Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 with tiller three seasons ago and love it. It's a 24 VDC system that uses two group 27 12 VDC batteries wired together in a series to deliver the 24 volts needed. It delivers about the same horse power as a 6 horse outboard - and the torque of about an 8 hp outboard. Not cheep - but has been reliable and quiet. I go out around 60 days per year, so I think that I've got a pretty good idea so far.
