the boom with sails up is 8inches lower in rear than in front. is this normal?

Are you pulling the downhaul under the gooseneck tight to stretch the luff of the sail? The downhaul then cleats off on a cleat in the track below the boom. It will cause the gooseneck to slide down at least that much.

A race-cut mainsail might very well droop lower astern. Mine did. When measuring racing sails, the length of the luff and foot are measured, but the length of the leech is not measured. Thus, a sailmaker can increase the square foot area of a racing sail by maximizing the length of the leech.
