The data plate on what I think is our 1980 SK/SR Cat-25 is missing and I haven't found any data on the stern. What I did find this weekend while cleaning out the dumpster were two Catalina 25 sail bags with the number 2230 stenciled on them. Would that be the hull number and if so what information does it reveal?
Thanks, Mike 1980 (I think) Cat 25 SR/SK dinette interior S/V Chariots of Fire

It might look like it was scratched in with a hot nail--mine did.
The Hull Identification Number (HIN) should start with CTY (Catalina Yachts) K (for C-25) then maybe 2230 (your hull number) M (for the date format) 81 (your production year if you're #2230) and a letter from A to L (for August through July respectively). That's all it will tell you.
Is there another location for this HIN? It looks like mine has either been completely covered or removed. I am going to sand the gelcoat down to the fiberclass in this area to see if I can uncover the serial number. Yikes!! They wont allow me to register it without a picture or a pencil scratching of the number.
Stop!! Sanding will only remove any chance of finding it. The fiberglass was laid up on the gelcoat in the mold, and the HIN was etched into the gelcoat by hand after the hull came out of the mold. It should be just below the rub-rail on the starboard side of the transom, and can be very hard to see.
With your hull number, Catalina should be able to give you a letter certifying the full HIN. Then I suppose you could scratch it in yourself with a hot nail... (?)
