In order to reduce the overall weight of our dinghy, we wanted to replace the old, heavy wooden oars with something lighter. The market offers a wide variety of light weight oars but the diameter of the shafts are all much thinner.

The other day I bumped into a solution by using a beach umbrella stand that screws into the sand and will clamp onto the bottom of the umbrella pole. By removing the twist part and reinforcing side brackets the clamp fits the existing oarlock. Fabricating PVC spacer inserts to fit the shaft the lock is held securely in place on the oar at the most desirable location and can be moved at will.

The beach umbrella holder is available at the cost of $2.99 at Target and Army and Navy stores.

Remove the side brackets and screw-into-the-sand part and you have a clamp that fits a standard oarlock

Not the most elegant and a little bulky it fits, allows flexibility in shaft length to suit your needs, is economical, won't rust. It is secured with a simpler plastic chain to the oar-lock

To fit the shaft we used a part of the PVC sewer pipe, heated flattened and cut it to size and friction fit it inside the black plastic holder. To eliminate the oar from slipping out of the oar-lock a teak stopper was added. All is held from loosing it overboard, in our case, with a couple of links of plastic chain. The plastic chain links are flexible with one side of end link legs cut which allows for easy clipping on and off and yet is secure.

Man, I've heard of thinking outside the box but, do you even know there is a box? Congratulations yet again!

In retrospect it looks to me something like parts of a larger system buried and functioning underground... and... forgot what the question was...
