I wish you'd explain that to the crabbers and lobstermen up here! |

Years ago I was telling a Virginia Marine Resources Commission water cop about how I had hooked a crab pot in a channel and had no choice but to cut the line, which means the crabber lost his pot. He said, "Don't ever feel bad about that. We do that all the time, or throw the pots up on the shore. There's no excuse for pots being in marked channels." |

I just happened to be looking at my old maps showing the fish nets on the Bay, and I notice that there are numerous licenses for pound nets near Deale, MD, although these are not necessarily in use.

Here is a website that shows all the regions of the Bay and the fish net sites.
Below is one of the maps showing Herring Bay in the center of the map and Deale north of that. Pairs of dots are the registered trap sites.
So, it is possible for you to get fouled in one of these things right at the end of your passage!

| Thanks John,I do most of my sailing here in Lake Geneva ,Wi. the water is clear, fishermen use boats and poles and the water is deep.I have sailed quite a bit in the Ft Myer,Sanibel area in Florida and have run into crab pots. Thanks for the info, the more info we get really helps.Looking forward to a fun sail and hoping for good weather. The snow is melted here and I can finally see my boat, however, they predict flurries on Sat.Oh well, maybe when I get back I can start cleaning her up. |
