I have a 1985, 25 swing keel. I have had our boat in a fresh water lake for 2 seasons. The btm was previously painted with vc17m. I have elected to repaint with the same paint. The btm color is a dark gray. while compounding my hull I cleaned a portion of the btm and notice a copper color appear. My question is. Is the btm discolored and I need to clean it before painting with vc17m. If so what is the correct proceedure and what should I clean the btm with. Also my keel is showing signs of rust in a few places.. I was told to wire brush the keel and paint it with vcTar, then finish off with vc17m. Can anyone out there share your experience and know how with me? Thanks, Jeff

The copper color is natural. I have used VC 17m and never did anything other than power wash when hauling which removed AL fouling and then simply wash in the spring before painting. Finding VC 17m on your bottom is very fortuitous.

Do I just power wash or do I need to scrub the btm.. If scrub, solvent?

Just power wash to remove any slime, growth, etc. Like Frank said, VC17M is a great bottom paint. Do a search for "VC17" in the forum and you will get lots of tips on how to apply it.

My boat lives in Lake St Clair, and I have never needed to power wash the hull. I use a soft bristle deck brush and a garden hose. I don’t even need soap to get the scum off. Just wet a section of the hull, scrub & rinse. The swing keel however is a different story.
