After seeing Seans pics of his boat, I noticed the cam cleats on the stern rail seats. I quickly saw the logic in controlling the jib sheets from the helm. Yesterday I tested the theory and today, made permanent the mounting. I feel the size of the jib doesn't neccesarily need a winch for control. Control can be gained from putting a foot on the boat for leverage and trimming. I bought 40' of 7/16 and ran it opposing the length of existing sheet. I mounted two Ronstan loop blocks on the stern seats by winding the block through a stand up spring wound around the seat tube. This took some effort but seems to work. (see $5 lazy jacks :) btw, they work great)
what I do is head up wind to take the pressure off ,then pull the sheet in .
still saveing for those winches . the winches reduce the pull by 1/2 I think. and be sure you dont put your foot on the locker lid for leverage ,I bet you can weaken the hinge screws over time there only small wood screws.
