PO had a custom cover made up locally. It covers 80% of the top works. I put it on when a big snow is expected and then if good weather is predicted afterwards, I brush off the snow and remove the cover and go sailing. The longest I ever have had to leave it on was about 1 1/2 months when the Potomac River froze over (Marina has flow agitators to keep ice from forming between the slips). Since the cover is not overly large, it helps facilitate using it when necessary and removing it for those days when sailing is possible.
I bought a powerboat cover cheap on Ebay and took it to a canvas shop and had a hole cut for the mast and a zipper to one side, and the pointed front squared off. It too covers most of the boat and can go over the boom or lay on the deck, which is how I use it. I use some of the straps that came with the cover to secure it to the stanchions. The whole project cost under $100 the first time. I've just done a second one, fixing some of my measuring mistakes from the first one, using a Sunbrella cover for a Malibu powerboat. They are not as nice looking as Larry's above, but are much less expensive. The second one cost a bit more than the first one, but was still less than $175.
I was so done with making frames, poly tarps and crossing my fingers during every snow/wind storm so when we bought IMPULSE I had a frame less cover made. It takes about a 1/2 hour to put on and cant hurt in the re-sale area . It is guaranteed for as long as I own the boat and for me will have a payback period of 2-3 winters. You can easily get into the boat through the side zippers by the cot pit. If you store your boat on your property or somewhere close where you can keep an eye on it then I would guess that home made covers would be OK for you. This is my 2nd winter with this cover and I love it
Is that cover custom-made locally ? Out of canvas matl ? When you say it is guaranteed for life...is that the matl mfr's warranty or the sailmaker/canvas maker's warranty ? I guess I was a bit curious as to the type of matl being used since it has such a long warranty.
Larry, I had it made locally herehttp://www.thecanvasstore.com/ It is made from Top Gun materialhttp://www.marchemcoatedfabrics.com/Top_Gun.phpThe Canvas Store warranty's the cover for as long as I own the boat. They are fantastic people to work with. It comes in 3 sections that all zip together. Forward, Mid, aft and is extremely well made. I also got a 10% discount because I bought it last year right after the Annapolis show. They have all the measurements for a Cat 25 so there wasn't any measuring to do and they had it ready in about a week
