I'm planning to rewire much of the interior, and I started looking at the original DC panel. It's never been a problem, but with new wire going to an old panel, maybe it's time to change that as well. The original behind the sink has 6 switches, one of which is taken up by MASTER. None of the new ones I've looked at have a Master switch. Why was (or is) that necessary?

Speaking from experience, when there's plasticy-smelling smoke coming out of the companionway and you're 10 miles out in the ocean, you want to turn ALL circuits off as quickly as possible. That Master probably opens the circuit to the battery so everything off the panel is dead. When I installed my new electric start outboard, I added a rotary battery switch--partly to prevent inadvertent (or mischievous) pressing of the starter button from starting the motor. But it also served as a master switch.

I have a separate A/B/Both red, rotary master switch to the batteries. Is the original MASTER switch on the panel itself (toggle, just like the others, with the little red indicator light next to it) redundant? I was wondering because most of the new panels don't seem to have it.

You could always add a 40A master switch to the cable feeding the panel from the battery. Your choice of toggle, lighted toggle, push button or rotary. It could be mounted next to the panel, or if there's an unused area on the panel you could always modify the panel to accept a toggle.
On Passage I have both a rotary switch mounted to the face of the cabinet and a master switch on the panel. I only use the rotary switch and rarely use the panel master switch.

It is nice to have a master switch. I set the individual circuts to 'on' like gps, depth,VHS,water pump then when I get on the boat I only have to flip the master instead of each individual switch. End of the day just flip the master off and you know everything is off. Another words, One switch controls your preset switches.

...and that can be the battery selector switch. I suspect (but don't know) the standard equipment from Catalina was one battery without an "all off" switch other than the Master on the panel. That's how mine was (as third owner).
