I need to replace a missing Batten. My mainsail battens are fiberglass and are 1/2" wide. The batten pockets are much wider. Should the batten fill the pocket or are the skinny battens ok.

thanks

Mine are about 1 1/2 inches wide. Maybe a .1 inch thick. Fiberglass. I believe they are original to the boat. Full batten main.

Battens are usually smaller than the batten pocket. If your other battens are 1/2", I'd suggest replacing it with the same. When I bought my boat new, I bought North sails for it, and they had 1/2" battens. When I replaced the North mainsail, the new one, from a different manufacturer, also had 1/2" battens. The battens on my C&C 35 are 1/2", and the battens on my friend's 28' Triton are also 1/2". Your sails should have a manufacturer's label. You could ask the manufacturer what size they intended it to have. I think it would be unlikely that a previous owner would replace all the battens with different size battens.

Would a wider batten perform better? The pocket will hold a 3/4" batten

I doubt it. Battens should be flexible enough so that they bend easily in light air, so that the sail will take the curved shape that drives the boat.

I've actually considered making my own lighter weight battens that flex a bit more. Just a thought. My main is a 3+1 full.
