I was working on the galley drawers yesterday. I noticed that the drain hose connecting the sink and the through-hull fitting dips down in the middle. In other words, the low spot is about a foot before the through-hull fitting. Is this intentional? Is there any reason not to shorten the hose so it drains more efficiently and doesn't hold standing water? I only open the through-hull to drain the sink and/or cooler.

Solomon I had a similar situation with the head sink. The water would just pool up in the dip and there'd be an air bubble below it preventing the sink drain from draining. Drove me nuts, so I found a squeeze bottle to blow it through at first. Then I got my tools and removed the hose clamps from the fitting, measured the actual chord length I needed to eliminate the dip, cut the hose, then reattached the hose with the double clamps. No more dip and the drain worked way better! I also took a 2x4 wooden block and wedged it in between the hose and the hull to raise it a wee bit.
I used a piece of wood to raise and straighten the hose--it must have "walked" between my ownership and Bruce's... An upward loop in the hose can impede drainage because the water in the sink has to push the air trapped in the high spot down through the thru-hull, and there's very little "head" to do it. So a little water will wiggle through under the trapped air. There's no reason for a loop except maybe to go over something in the cabinet--you're not blocking sewer gas as at the trap under a household sink.
