Today is the start of the race from south of the Bay Bridge, and I took a day off work to sail out there to see the start and the 35 boats from 29 ft to 157 ft in length. This should be quite a sight! 1:30 is the start for class AA schooners.
It's a sunny day with a southwest breeze of 10-15 kt.
The beautiful schooner Pride of Baltimore II has turned left, away from the Hampton Roads entrance to Norfolk and Portsmouth harbors at the south end of the bay for some reason, with 4 miles to go, perhaps because there is no appropriate temporary docking facility in Portsmouth, VA for the 167 ft ship. Maybe they are busy dropping all those sails before motoring into the busy harbor past the Navy base. I don't know, but I guess they will announce something about it.
The bay is about 160 miles long, and I have never seen the southern two-thirds! This race covers 148 miles.
I got some surprisingly sharp photos from my rocking and rolling C-25 that I positioned a mile south of the start off of Annapolis, right in line with the Thomas Point Shoal Light House. I knew they all had to go right past me. About 50 sailboats and powerboats accompanied the schooner fleet down the bay at the start. I will upload the pix as soon as I am able.
