I spent a week sailing our C250 in northern Michigan recently. The image below is our top speed while sailing downwind from South Manitou Island back to Northport, Michigan.
Max speed on Gps's can be inaccurate unless the GPS is held still and below the waterline (center of rotation) . When going over the top of a wave, The GPS will have a greater forward movement as the boat comes over the top and starts down if it is fixed to the boat (pendulum effect) and a handheld will pick up the movement from your handling of the unit. My GPS(fixed) reads unrealistically high speeds and was told that this was the reason. If you want some really crazy Max speed numbers, Hoist the GPS up to the top of the mast.

I was with David Crosby on this trip! GPS was mounted next to the companion way so handling the unit was not a factor. I guess the boat getting tossed around could have effected the true speed displayed on the GPS. Running downwind in big waves and 30 mph gusts was quite a ride!! We had our hands full so we didn't notice the max speed on the GPS until we were back at the marina. Kudos to David for getting us back safely.
