A puzzle for this august group... (Warning--a friend who professionally restores historic yachts Is also puzzled...)

It apparently came off a 1950s vintage wooden cruising sloop, thought to have been a Luders 39... The shape is that of a jib, about 25' (+) at the luff and 10' at the foot. The material is not sailcloth, but netting made of heavy twine tied in about 1-1/2" squares. The luff, leech, and foot are rope bound in a canvas-like material that could be nylon. Grommets are set in heavy canvas triangles at the tack and clew, and the head has a rope loop for a hayard. Hanks are set about every 5' on the luff, with canvas sleeves that snap over them, as if to prevent chafing of something else against the hanks.

Might it be something to assist with dousing a spinnaker? WHAT IS IT? (I tried to get a photo that could help, but this "thing" is currently strung up for kids to use like a giant hammock.)

Dave , it sounds like a spinnaker forestay wrap preventer. I raced offshore in an S&S 34 (1970,s) and with a large masthead spinnaker running square with a big swell and light wind they would wallow and the spinnaker would collapse flapping on to the close by forestay. this was really bad at night when hard to see and respond. This went up the forestay and prevented the wrap

Thanks Graeme! We speculated on something like this, particularly because of the sleeves that snap over the the hanks. I knew somebody in this group would have a perspective on it!

Very interesting. First I've ever heard of them. Makes perfect sense. Something us lake sailors will most likely never see.
