Approximately 5 years ago I discovered my boat had the smile. It took me the entire summer to fix it. The boat has been in the water since 2010 and I finally hauled her (with lots of trepidations). I'm happy to report that the smile held and all is well. I just recorded the process in my blog for all to read. Suffice it to say I'm a happy sailor, glad my repair held up. Thanks to all of you who advised me and answered my questions during the process 5 years ago!

See what can happen when you do repairs the right way . . .

Is this still a concern on a lead keel? Mine is hauled rite now and there is no smile and all looks great, sanded to bare gel for barrier coat. But the keel looks cocked sideways a degree or two. Probably came that way from the factory? Any thoughts?

I'm not positive but I think the smile happens to boats with a cast iron keel and the mild steel/rusted out keel boats. The stainless keel bolts and a lead keel took care of that problem. If your keel is on an angle and there isn't any crack then I would guess it came that way.

I think Islander is right. I seem to remember previous discussions in this group and remember it is mostly a cast iron (read age) thing; and from what I have heard 27s are also subject to it. If you do not have it, do not sweat it.
But for one thing, restoring an old boat is work. But I never forgot what my friend told me "if you only work on the boat you'll get burned out. Fix those things that make a boat fit for sailing and then alternate work and play."

FWIW, the "smile" isn't unique to Catalinas. Any boat with a bolt on keel can have a smile. For example, C&C owners call it a C&C smile.

The smile is generally a result of a hard grounding, where the keel hits bottom hard enough to crack the joint between the keel and the keel stub.
