Agreed, You have to wonder what they were thinking.
quote:
They had departed from Rhode Island and were ultimately headed to Australia.

Yep, And by what insane reasoning did they think that a dead of winter departure with storms every 2-3 days and 0deg temps was a good idea?
Maybe Dave it just shows that they haven't yet found the cure for stupid

Maybe they are products of our dumbed-down public education system. As you said, there is still no cure for stupid!

OK - so really? This was not an accident, this incident was not beyond their control...

I'd like to know if the USCG sends a bill to cover the cost of their efforts? Of course, nothing can compensate the brave Coasties for risking life and limb.

Their stance has always been they don't want to discourage anyone from calling for help. Prank calls are another matter--they can land you in federal prison.

Darwin can't help us when the USCG intervenes!

A little more detail...

http://www.sailfeed.com/2015/02/mid-blizzard-evacuation-australians-rescued-off-10k-ebay-boat/

A retired "racing sled" with a delaminating hull and a crew of two, with one (supposed) sailor...

I'd say if the USCG tells you not to go, and you go, you should be responsible for the cost of your rescue (and criminally responsible if anybody is injured or killed).

There's stupid, there's obstinate, and there's obstinately stupid (or stupidly obstinate). At some point, you should be responsible for any damage done.

I think they are Aussies, which is a surprise, I have a great deal of respect for folks that sail down under (my sister lived in Perth for most of her life and now lives in Tassie)

The previous owner of the boat sold it because "The hull was delaminating" but you can fix that with a few rolls of duct tape.

It's that time of year again where cap'ns with idiotsyncrasies head out of harbor.

(deliberately misspelled!)

Do you mean they abandoned that boat with all that booze? Does anyone know the lat. and long. where it was last seen?

I think she'll be late for that, but you might watch for her to pass Iceland a few weeks from now.

But from the story, I'm suspicious most of the hootch was consumed in port!
