don't know the answer Dave. But there ARE some on the site who know a lot of the history. Better yet is to call Catalina directly. They were VERY helpful to me with mast drawings, cradle drawings etc., which they freely e-mailed to me. Why the question? Curiosity, History buff, looking for name ideas?
Michael I called Catalina today, The man said that they could tell me how many 250 were made, but it was "insignificant" to them as to how many were tall rigs. Well, so much for my little "Q". Thanks you all for input.
The association's list includes #797, a 1997 (one of those figures is wrong); and #898, a 2006. I'm surprised by the latter--I thought the tall rig was discontinued well before then. But I suppose it could have been a special order. Note that we only have 302 C-250s listed of the over 1000 built.
I got curious while looking at this, and noticed that Catalina only built about 300 C-250s in the last 10 years of its production, and maybe about 30 in the last three years (going on hull numbers). Compare that to something around 170 C-250s in the first year, and over 1500 C-25s per year in the mid-1980s. We were recently discussing the changes in the market--clearly it has changed, and it's not hard to see why Catalina gave up on that part of it.
...The new 275 has less space than our 250. Doesn't appear to be a cruising design, at least not my kind of cruising.
It looks to me to be aimed at the club racing market--perhaps to consider against the J-80, but with maybe somewhat better family/weekending accommodations and features.
However, it's a little like Pontiac trying to go up against BMW--it really doesn't matter which one is the better "value." Club racers will want to be in Js. I predict a slow, quiet death for the C-275.
