what is the difference between the loose footed and attached main. what would a standard 78 Catalina have, I think loose footed but not sure. Looking to buy a new main sail.Thanks

The year of your boat makes no difference. You can have either type of sail. But for a loose footed sail to work as intended you will need a functioning outhaul.

A loose footed sail is superior in my opinion.

A loose footed mainsail is only connected at the tack and clew of the sail. The sail is free of the boom on the bottom edge (foot).

On a regular bolt rope sail, the bolt rope is fed in the slot on the boom and is connected all the way along the boom. Sorry if I didn't explain the difference.
