I'm making up a template for a captains log book that I'm ordering. It's a custom book, so I have a fair bit of flexibility. Not wanting to create one from scratch, I was hoping someone had a template I could start with. We're quite new to sailing and not sure exactly what's needed. Thanks

A lot of folks don't even bother.

When we are on a cruise we will keep a log. The first entry is a detailed itinerary and who is onboard. After that we make entries hourly using a kitchen timer as a reminder. Each entry includes:
Date
Time
Position (Lat - Long)
Heading
Speed
Weather
Noteable events onboard. Usually these are pretty silly.

My wife bought me a log book for my birthday a long time ago. It has several sections:
1. trip log with times, lat, long, tide, current - for dead reckoning
2. trip start loc, destination, ship mates
3. fuel log - how much fuel used versus distance
4. engine hours
5. provisions checklist and what items you bring on a trip
- in the appendix -
6. boat gear list - what equipment you have on board (in case of loss)
7. engine maintenance schedule - oil changes

I've had it for years and usually record multi-day trips

The Admiral bought one for our boat and we started using it yesterday with the name change ceremony. So far and I think for the future we will mostly enter guest names that sail with us. It is published by Weems & Plath.

Thanks for all the help, now that the weather is good we can't wait to get out.I really like the provisions list/checklist, this would be a great reminder.
