Tray I lived in San Diego for a couple/few years and there is a sub base there. It was pertty nice 72 degrees all year and not much rain. Water is much colder than the east coast (at least below Cape Cod). I didn't have a boat there but rented a sailboat a few times and a friend of mine had a 40' sailboat we went out on a few times. It was really nice usually saw sea lions, dolphins and once a whale. There are a few Islands off the coast that are good destinations. Some of the west coast sailors on the forum could fill you in better I just thought I would put my two cents in.
Tray, I don't live on the coast, but I have raced Hobies there when I was younger, lighter, etc. The sailing was usually excellent with steady winds in the 10 to 15 mph range with maybe 3 to 6 foot swell. Ventuta sits at the east end of the Santa Barbara Channel. To the north you have about 40 miles of beach from Ventura to Gaviota and beyond. To the south are the Channel Islands. The prevailing winds are from the west/northwest. Beacuse of the east/west alignment of the chanel, storms can cause big wind and swell at the east end. As Ray mentioned, the water temp is cool. Expect near 70 for a peak at San Diego, high 60's near Ventura and cooler as you go farther north. Harbor facilities are available at Santa Barbara, Ventura/Channel Islands, and Oxnard. Right now, in Ventuta, at 08:30 the wind is offshore (from the east) at 9 mph and it is 75 degrees California's Santa Ana wind!
Not much to add to the above -- other than the following link to the Channel Islands National Park site http://www.channel.islands.national-park.com/map.htm. These islands are pretty close. Catalina Island is much farther away (> 12 hour cruise).
You have Ventura Harbor and Port Hueneme (although I don't know if non-Navy and/or pleasure craft can use it).
You will be very fortunate to live here for the sailing. First, you can sail year round -- I have lived here since 1986 and have not seen a month go by when I could not sail. The prevailing winds are westerlies about 10 to 15 knots. There are wonderful islands within 15 to 20 miles off shore. There are excellent moorages at both Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor (where I live) The Oracle America's Cup crew trained here for 6 months last year and they were very pleased with the conditions. There are never freezing conditions which is hell on boats. I consider this to be sailing paradise, as long as one is respectful of the ocean conditions and keeps his boat in good condition. Give me a call if you decide to move here and I'll take you for a sail in "Jax." email: davida@dslextreme.com
