Can't see where this has been discussed before. Wondering if anyone has replaced the original telescoping support with a gas filled type found on trunk lids on automobiles these days. hhh
I can't see any advantage to doing this. The hatch isn't that heavy and with a gas strut it would be fully open or fully closed nothing in between. Sometimes I like to crack it open just a few inches.
Similarly, I often left it about 3/4" open, with the "dogs" resting on the brackets and thumbscrew tightened, for ventilation. Rain never entered. You can see it if you click the thumbnail picture below.
Is there a specific reason you want a gas strut up there?
I have gotten a sail caught on the steel track once or twice during a sail change so i can imagine the gas strut eliminating the threat of tearing a sail on sharp steel, but beyond that I tend to agree that there is little benefit to this.
Now, a cam with a lifting screw on it, that would be cool... off to play in ACAD...
