Posted - 10/18/2020 : 19:03:46 What are typical sailcloth weights for a furler headsail (I'm not a racer)? I know my former hank-on genoa (150) was much lighter weight material then my working sail (e.g. 110). With a furling sail, how do you balance the need for different weight sails or is going with a 135 designed for moderate to heavy air the compromise?

Posted - 10/19/2020 : 18:25:21 Thanks Dave....I spoke with a local loft earlier in the year who gave me a quote for a 140 using 5.3oz Dacron and I looked at Ullman's sails on CD with 5.6oz and 6.4oz material. Was just trying to put things in context. I chose the Ullman 135...and I still have my original genoa recut for the furler if need be.

Posted - 10/18/2020 : 20:16:22 Everything's a compromise... You're not a racer, but in what conditions do you expect to find yourself? (Most of us coastal sailors have a fair amount of control over that.) I don't know what sailcloth my 130 had, but a consideration is that you always have the option of roller-reefing it. (We opted for reducing or dropping the main first.)
I would present your question, objectives and circumstances to a sailmaker--even remotely to someone like Gary Swenson at Ullman Ventura Sails. He builds the sails for Catalina Direct, built sails for Catalina Yachts (different company), and probably knows these boats better than anyone. Not that a local sailmaker couldn't steer you, but Gary has been the go-to guy for a lot of people here.
