I have single line reefing, I think it was standard. Total PITA, never works, too much friction, too many points to get tangled up. I think I'll go with using the current setup for just the tack, and then set up a line as shown below for the clew.

I'm thinking I will use a turning block (cheek block?), and then a cam cleat at the mast towards the tack.

What are best practices here, good solutions that are out there?

I got a small block that included a shackle attached, and a stainless steel ring (about 2" diameter). Ring goes on the starboard side of the cringle, block on the port side with shackle reaching through around the ring. When you do this, the reefing line goes up and down on the port side instead of going through the cringle.

Reef line needs to go back to end of the boom for appropriate foot tension (you want a flat sail in heavy weather).

A block in the clew cringles for each reef would greatly reduce the friction in a single line system. With that modification, I was always happy with single line reefing.

Adding a block at the tack always caused problems for me, because it would pull the sail below the boom before I had enough tension on the clew.
