I’ve been getting alerts from the Americas Cup Racing channels with background and hype for the upcoming racing in 2021.

In a few weeks’ time the boats will be coming to New York to put on demonstration races. They’ll be traveling afterwards to other cities to demo the sailing.

Today’s video shows a qualifier race from the 35th cup between the U.K. and New Zealand that was quite eventful. They were sailing AC50s.

The Brits and Kiwis were pushing very hard before the start in 20plus knot winds and got into a bit of trouble jumping the gun into the starting area.

Then just before crossing the line the Brits started ahead with the Kiwis right behind, when a puff came up and buried the bows in a wave and the NZ boat pitch-poled and threw half the crew into the water.

The Kiwi crew was keeping his head but this was an epic disaster. Luckily the foils are built with styrofoam inside to prevent the boats from turtling.

It’s great that they’re replaying the key matches to provide background for upcoming events. Say what you will about the new fangled boats but the technology is now allowing speeds and conditions that require split second judgment calls and true athleticism. It’s not just a bunch of rail meat sitting around anymore, the captain and the crew must all actively push to win, or suffer the consequences..

True that.
Many years ago we were racing in the Newport Volvo series on Bill Cargill's J-35 (yes that long ago) and we were on the same course as the J-Class boats. Approaching the finish we were on starboard so Endeavour had to take our stern. Well we all just stopped doing what we were supposed to be doing and just stared as she passed by.
Truly awe inspiring.
