 Fresh water tank vent

Why is the fresh water tank vented all the way to the outside of the boat vs. having a shorter vent tube terminating inside the boat just far enough to keep water from sloshing out? Is it to keep from adding humidity to the cabin?
Reason I ask is I plan to remove the old tank and tubing and need to either temporarily or permanently plug the hole in the deck where the vent fitting is.
When I reinstall, should I put everything back like Catalina had it with the tank vent fitting on deck next to the deck fill? Have others done something different? I'm planning to install a pressure water system for washing but not drinking, but that won't happen for another year or two.

Thanks! I didn't think about overflow when filling. That makes sense. I'll use a piece of hose like Scott suggested for the temporary fix.

Yep.. I could but then I'd have two hose clamps in that location....
and an extra piece of hose. I keep thinking I've seen a black cover somewhere. Can't place it.

Ray, a short piece of vinyl hose. Put a bolt in the end and clamp it.

I removed my tank and left the plug on the deck and simply put caulk in the hole of the vent fitting at the deck. The screen holds it in. The inside fitting points down just behind a rail in the "lavatory" or sink area and I've put a small plastic plate from a set I have to hold water if it leaks.

and to show me if it is leaking.


I'd like to figure out something that would cap that inside side of the fitting and hose clamp it.

I would put it all back the way Catalina has it just to avoid having to patch the hole in the deck. Unless your a expert with fiberglass you know the repair will always show.

...and you can fill the tank until water comes out of the vent. Vented inside, one false move with the hose might make a bit of a mess.

Not an expert but the vent has to be above the water line when the boat is fully healed to prevent spilling and when it's being filled overflow dumps outside. Many ocean sailboats will run the vent line up inside a stancion. That keeps seawater from entering the tank and contaminating the water. Bottom line is that the vent needs to be higher than the tank at every expected angle of heel.
