Posted - 09/18/2019 : 10:57:27 My 2008 wing keel 250 has what appears to be a 135 headsail. I think they did that because it's in Long Beach, VA, and they needed a big jib. From what I've read, that may be overpowered for the blustery Channel Islands area. I understand the boats originally came with a 110. If they were designed for a 110, what about taking the sail down to a 100 and turning it into a self-tacking jib? For my own reasons, I'm thinking seriously about all the simplification possible for handling the boat. Would that just underpower it too much?

You mentionned setting your jib as a self-tacking jib. Are you planning to buy the kit from Catalina ($1,250 plus transport and installation) or simply configure the lines so that the sail follows the tacks?

I bought my boat new from a Catalina dealer. The 110% jib was standard and the 135% jib was an upgrade. Both were available from Catalina Yachts, so it's not like the previous owner went overboard (pun). The CDI roller furler was also standard equipment.
Because this is a new-to-you boat, I recommend keeping the 135%, but keep it furled at 100%. Rig the self-tacking lines the way you want, then test it out. If you have too much weatherhelm because it's underpowered, then change it. If you love it go from there, but try it for about a year.
You don't want to spend about $1000. and find you don't like it. As you say, your sailing venue is different, so find what works for you.
